Spanish text on verso
This is an important map of the central and western portions of Mexico. Several gold and silver mines are located in the central region.
This map is from Ortelius's "Theatrum" which contained the first printed regional maps of the New World, the first of these maps was the "Hispaniae Novae Sivae Magnae." The map "depicts Mexico and New Spain mainly to the northwest of Mexico City, making numerous references to the Spanish settlements and Indian locals alike. It provides a relatively-detailed of Spanish colonization attempts into the second half of the 16th century and a vibrant picture of continued Spanish expansion in this part of the New World. . .The sources for this map clearly are the accounts from sundry Spanish overland and coasting expeditions, dating back to the time of Cortes." (Abraham Ortelius and the First Atlas pg 216), Broecke 13
