Original letter typed on beige paper and signed in black ink by S. J. Ray. Datelined "Westport, Conn., March 8, 1943." 7 1/4" x 10 1/2." One page, complete. Letter is very clean and intact. A Fine copy. Al Parker (1906)-1985) was an American artist and illustrator best-known for the magazine covers he did for the Ladies' Home Journal between the late 1930s and 1950s. Parker also made illustrations for the Woman's Home Companion, Good Housekeeping, The Saturday Evening Post, Sports Illustrated, and Vogue. In this letter, Parker writes to Marjorie Whitney of the School of Design at the University of Kansas and gives advice to art students during the current war, World War II. The following is an excerpt: "Dear Miss Whitney: I realize never in history has the art student been so in need of encouragement as he is now. Amid a global fire he must continue to grow into the honest, wise, and profound chronicler of tomorrow. He can still grow, whether at the front, factory or home, by learning life and sublimating his experiences in terms of art. This will not stop, it is part of the peace we have set out to win. It is a certainty the talents of artists are a great value as war weapons. And we will need all the weapons we can get. So don't let down.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
