During late Victorian times when annual holidays were first introduced for the working classes,W H Goss,an enterprising porcelain manufacturer,foresaw the market for trippers anxious to bring back a memento of their outing to the seaside.With his eldest son,Adolphus,he manufactured delicate miniatures in white porcelain decorated with coats of arms of seaside and other towns.
So began the craze of collecting Goss china which was to last until the 1930's, when the trade rapidly declined.It is thought that some 90% of all Goss china was discarded over the following thirty years until its revival in the late 1960's.
During the eighty year period that the Goss factory was in existence,over 1800 different shapes were produced.This fifth edition of the Price Guide lists and values them all.It encompasses the whole range of Goss through all periods,ranging from the First Period in the 1860's when only terracotta and parian was produced through to the late Third Period in the 1920's when toby jugs,flower girls and Cottage Pottery were popular.
There has been a remarkable increase in awareness of heraldic china during the past ten years (then 1988),and this Encyclopaedia will provide the answers to most questions about Goss china.
