Condition of hardcover: Minor chips to lettering on spine; edges lightly age toned; old remains (short strips of toning) of paper or document that was once clipped or taped to front endpapers and half-title page; else book is overall Near Fine. No cracks or tears to binding; no writing or underlines in text; no page tears. Not a former library book. Dustjacket: Lightly age toned; shelf wear; minor abrasion (from use); price of $4.95 lined out (because book dealer sold book as a first edition signed collectible at a much higher price to collector); else overall Very Good. Protected in Mylar cover. Book kept by a book collector in a temperature-controlled bookcase - no heavy damp smell or the smell from a smoker. This excellent, page-turning book is about two long-term sailors drawing temporary duty to escort a third sailor to the Naval Prison at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Last Detail tells the story of their journey to the brig and its aftermath. According to the publisher: The Last Detail "is full of muscular high spirits, some of it derived from the salty dialogue between the characters Billy and Mule. The boy, Larry, is an innocent being led to the slaughter." Fascinating reading. Very collectible, especially signed. The story was made into a film starring Jack Nicholson, Carol Kane, and others.
