Contemporary ½ calf with blind borders and marble boards, spine in six densely gilt compartments of raised bands, red morocco label on two, edges speckled red, blue endpapers. , Minor chipping to head of spine; minor brownspot affecting centre of final six leaves, including final plate (“Taking Caudle”). Apart from that and minor offsetting from the plates onto the adjacent page, the book is in very good condition, text and plates are generally clean and crisp., 8vo., P. (4), blank, frontis, title, printer’s imprint, dedication iii-iv, advertisement v-vii, blank, “ludicrous in art” ix-xxxix, blank, half-title, blank, introduction (4), list of plates, blank, half-title, blank, 5-184, (4)., Complete with 26 hand-coloured caricature plates by the author.

Dagley was primarily an English subject printer, and “at first made designs for jewellery…. As a medallist he obtained some success, and he published works on Gems in 1804 and 1822. His life was a continued struggle against poverty” (Bryan’s). The book is an illustrated poem with several caricatures, after the manner of Pierce Egan’s Life in London published the previous year. Dagley wrote the introductory preface on the “ludicrous in art” as well as drew and engraved all the plates; Thomas Gaspey, uncredited, wrote the poem itself., DNB V:377-8; Bryan’s II:3.
