Ray, S. J : Typed Letter Signed - S. J. Ray

Original letter typed on beige paper and signed in black ink by S. J. Ray. Datelined "Kansas City, Mo., February 9, 1943." 6" x 8." One page, complete. Letter is very clean and intact. A tiny chip at the top edge and a few slight wrinkles and folds on the paper. A Fine copy. S. J. Ray (1891-1970) was an American artist and the longtime editorial cartoonist of the Kansas City Star in Missouri from 1931-1963. Ray's cartoons covered a variety of subject matter but among them were significant historical events such as World War II and the Cold War. Ray achieved much acclaim in his lifetime for his work including recognition from the U.S. federal government and other government organizations. For example, some of his political cartoons from the 1950s were reprinted by the State Department as propaganda against the Soviet Union. Ray also received awards from the U.S. Treasury Department and Freedom Foundation. In this letter, Ray responds to a request from Marjorie Whitney of the School of Design at the University of Kansas and offers advice, based on his own experience in World War I, to art students who are currently living through World War II. The following is an excerpt: "My dear Miss Whitney: "I wish I could talk to the arts students as you have kindly invited me to do, and perhaps say something that would encourage them to press forward thru the wilderness of tho'ts that are so confusing to young people today. ... I know the discouragement--and the wondering if ambition and striving are worth while--that seemingly obstructs the progress of today's student. I was just beginning my career when the First World War called me into service. However, a tho't that ought to be assuring is the fact that after the turmoil is over there will be great need for all those things that make finer living. And the arts have always survived. So it is up to the students who are beginning a new era to carry on, in spite of the grim times thru which they must pass. And I am sure they will.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine.
