Collection of three original materials including a memorandum, an invoice, and the envelope both were sent in. All materials are on stationery of the Reed Company, Limited, which was based in Moncton, New Brunswick (NB), Canada. Memorandum and receipt are dated September 11, 1917. Envelope postmarked September 12, 1917. Memo measures 8 1/2" x 11 1/4." Invoice measures 8 1/2" x 7 1/4." Envelope measures 6 1/4" x 3 3/4." All materials are very clean and intact. The memo and invoice have a few horizontal and vertical fold lines but these are likely original. The envelope was torn open along the right edge to remove the memo and invoice. The invoice and memo accompany one another. The memo acknowledges that a bill of lading was issued from the Intercolonial Railway and Prince Edward Island Railway, and the invoice lists seven lines of goods that were sold. The customer who purchased these goods was Dr. James W. Cail in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The memo and invoice each list the items Cail purchased which were Purity Flour, Cream of Tartar, Rice, Raisins, White Naptha Soap, Ivory Soap, and Herring. The items on the memo are handwritten in blue pencil. The invoice is entirely printed in black ink except for the stamped date. The envelope with the invoice and memo was sent to Cail using a 2-cent Canadian stamp that shows an illustrated sepia portrait of King George V in side profile facing left. The Reed Company, Limited was a wholesale grocer and importer which was originally founded in 1891 by F. P. Reid. The company was known then as F. P. Reid Company and located on Main Street in Moncton, NB. After a change of ownership in 1910, F. P. Reid Company was renamed Reed Company, Limited and relocated to the Moncton waterfront. Even after the name change, the company was still managed by Reid for many years who helped maintain its role as a prominent molasses importer. It is known that the Reed Company remained open until at least 1942 when one of its schooners was struck by a German U-boat which stopped its importing business. During the 1980s, many of the buildings along the Moncton waterfront were refurbished.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
