68 x 55 mm; miniature book in full limp red morocco, fastened with aid of leather tab of upper cover folding over fore-edge, and inserting into flap in lower cover; a.e.g.; unpaginated. Cover a little rubbed; hinges slightly tender; few small fountain pen ink marks to two adjacent pages. Good condition. The ownership inscription on the front pastedown reads "Annie M. Bowker / Cossackpost / Rosmead". There is a pencilled note, apparently from a much later date, to the lower free endpaper. Ann Mitford Bowker was the third child of John Mitford Bowker, who was the second son of the 1820 Settler also named John Mitford Bowker. The farm Cossack Post, where John Mitford Bowker II died in 1924, is at Rosmead, a little east of Middelburg in the Great Karoo. Annie Bowker's little devotional book has been tentatively dated at circa 1830, based on a comparison with examples of editions of the same work listed by COPAC, where the date of the presentation inscription is of assistance. Charles Whittingham founded the famous Chiswick Press in 1810, and was assisted, and ultimated succeeded, by his innovative nephew, also Charles Whittingham. The printery was largely based at Chiswick during its existence.
