One of the earliest works on magnetism, originally published in 1600. Gilbert (1544-1603) studied at Cambridge and practiced medicine in London before becoming physician to Elizabeth I. His De Magnete made the lodestone a thing of magic no longer; Gilbert's work (which included the introduction of the term "electric") helped develop magnetic compasses for navigation and laid the foundation for work by Galileo and Kepler, and reinforced the Copernican theory., Fine
