Title page engraved with a vignette of a robed woman seated and poring over a globe and a chart, surrounded by books and measuring equipment; below her are four other robed women standing in front of the names of four continents (America, Africa, Europe and Asia). The woman before “America” holds crop vegetables; the woman before Asia stands next to a couched lion. The five are placed upon a stationary platform surrounded by a turbulent sea. (Engraved by W.B. Maps included are: the northeastern United States, of England and Wales, the Biblical regions of Israel and Palestine, Ireland, the states of the Germanic Confederation, a railway map of central Europe, and several inset maps of various ports and coasts of England (2 leaves).
This set of maps is "Part I. The Royal Illustrated Atlas…". Atlases were often mailed to subscribers in small portions as the maps became available. When all of the parts were collected they were taken for binding into a complete atlas, where the paper mailing covers were discarded and are rarely seen today. This group of maps includes the illustrated title page, List and Order of Arrangement, and eight single and double page maps. These decorative and illustrated maps are by G.H. Swanston and J. Bartholomew. The double page maps measure approximately 21 x 17".
