Samuel Ayscough : An Index to the Remarkable Passages and Words made use of by Shakspeare

John Stockdale, London, c. 1790

Contemporary full diced calf, gilt ribbon tooled border, spine in 6 compartments of gilt tooled bands, gilt lettering on two, inner dentelles gilt, all edges speckled, endpapers marbled. , Occasional browning, a red ink blot appears on the lower margin of a few pages in the middle of the book, otherwise a very good copy., Large 8vo, P. title, blank, 1083-1752., Ex-libris on paste down end paper.

This is the third volume of Stockdale's compilation of the works of Shakespeare and is complete in itself. Samuel Ayscough was a librarian and index-maker at the British Museum. Until Ayscough “brought out his ‘Index’ in 1790 there was no concordance to Shakespeare. This was a speculation on the part of the publisher, John Stockdale, who paid two hundred guineas for the index, which was specially designed to accompany his edition of the ‘Dramatic Works,’ in 2 volumes bound in royal. 8vo. In this excellent compilation the words are arranged alphabetically with the lines in which they occur, then the name of the play, and in five separate columns the act, scene, page, column and line. The last three particulars of course refer only to the edition of 1790, but the index may be made to serve any other text.†(National Biography)
