UK,thick 8vo HB,2nd edn,rev'd and enlarged.[Originally and first published by same publisher,November 1889 in a variety of bindings and in some 3000+ copies,and that 1st edn only enumerating 367 British bird species.In this the 2nd edn,the number of British bird species is raised to 384.The original illustrator of many of the identical illustrations in the 1st edn,G. E. Lodge,has provided a further 20 new illustrations for this 2nd edn.] Owner's handwritten,ink name+date (1900) to top,right-hand corner of half-title page.Publisher's original red cloth boards with an edge-lined bordered blind stamped decorative freize along top+bottom edges of the front board and to the head+foot of spine/backstrip too,and bright,crisp, blocked gilt letters to the front board. The spine/backstrip sunned with visible but slightly oxidised gilt lettering and with chipping, fraying and some minor loss of cloth at both foot+head of same - a ubiquitous fault with the ageing of the thin cloth covering,rear board undecorated and with no blind stamped horizontal decorative freize.Black endpapers with no hinge cracking to either set of same,some light foxing to rear free endpaper's facing side,opposing the last page of the index.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges,corner tips minimally bumped with some miniscule rubbing/fraying - but no other major nicks,tears or splits elsewhere than aforementioned head+foot of spine/backstrip.Top edges slightly aged and dusty,fore-edges slightly more aged/ toned and darker; contents bright,tight, clean other than some minimal sporadic foxing/spotting to the reverse of the 3 maps,text body pages glossy paper so very minimal or minor spotting,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - possibly unread other than my own collation.UK,thick 8vo HB,2nd edn, rev'd and enlarged,x-xlpp+2-776pp [paginated] includes a Preface to 2nd edn (1899),an introduction consisting bird Orders & families commencing with Passeres and ending with Tubinares and with family Puffinida,individual birds description with accompanying b/w illustration as a head-piece,2pp appendix,and an index.Plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,3 double-page coloured maps - a Bathy-Orographical map of British Isles,a Bathy-Orographical map of Europe,and a North Polar Chart/map. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age (120+ years) and nature,i.e. a heavy reference manual,and even internally,the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the mainly exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading. A comprehensive and extensive,illustrated ornothological manual.
