201 pages (complete). Plate on page 51 missing. Appendices complete. A very rare copy of this edition, the third and revised and enlarged, was the first to list those who perished. Although not tested this list is considered to be amongst the most accurate. Shepherd was one of the four men to survive the infamous massacre. The front pastedown has a gift inscription and other markings: "India / Cawnpore August 5th 1892 [this appears to have been appended at a later date] / From H Medcalf / To my dear mother E Batty." The initials J.W.M. are pricked beneath. There is a possibility (this cannot be confirmed) that this is the same Drummer Henry Medcalf (later Metcalfe) who was at the Siege of Lucknow and was an experienced India soldier and colonial army man. This cover has a firm, worn cover. It is thrillingly aged. There are marks. It is healthy. Within, the contents are foxed and marked here and there. The pages are clear, benign, certain, diligent, compulsive, resolute and fit. An atmospheric, agreeably contented copy. fk. Book Condition: Fair.
