Original publisher's leaf with two hand-colored plates. One plate (labeled "16." at top outside of the neatline) shows a map of the Greek regions comprising Boeotia, Phocis, Locris, Megaris, and parts of Attica, Corinthia, and Doris. The other plate (labeled "17.") is a composite that shows two maps of Athens and its harbors and the city of Athens. Maps feature beautiful watercolored outlines in blue, green, pink, and yellow around country or regional borders (harbor map only has pink coloring; city of Athens map is uncolored). Major cities and natural features such as mountains, rivers, and gulfs are shown. The city map includes a numbered key that corresponds to architectural features within Athens such as the Parthenon, Propylaea, and Arch of Hadrian. Scales of distance in Greek stadia and Roman and English miles are included on Plate 16. Scales of distance for Plate 17 are in Olympic stadia and English feet. No date, circa 1836-1851. Leaf measures 13 1/4" x 10"; actual plate measures 5 3/4" x 8 3/8." Leaf and maps are very clean and intact except for slight foxing. The center fold line is original as this map originally came from an atlas. Lines of latitude and longitude also included on map of the Greek regions. The following is printed beneath the map: "Philadelphia, Blanchard & Lea." and "Eng. by G. E. Sherman, N.Y." Blanchard & Lea (fl. c. 1836-1851) was a Philadelphia-based publishing house and successor to Matthew Carey & Company. George E. Sherman was an American map engraver based in New York and co-founder of the publishing firm, Sherman & Smith or Stiles, Sherman & Smith (fl. c. 1829-1855).. Map.
