Two original letters typed and handwritten on one leaf of beige paper. The typed letter appears within the top 2/3 of the leaf and was authored by Herbert Baldwin. The bottom 1/3 of the leaf is handwritten and signed in black ink by "A. L. Smith," who has the title of "Col., A.C.G. [Acting Commissary General], Chief Commissary." Datelined July 17, 1906 in Manila, Philippines. The location is identified as "Manila, P. I. [Philippine Islands]" in the typed letter. 8" x 10 1/2." One page, complete. Paper, printed text, and handwriting are very clean and intact. A few horizontal and vertical fold lines. Slight wrinkling to the paper. A Near Fine copy. The typed letter is a copy that was furnished by Herbert Baldwin, son of the late Lieutenant Colonel W. H. Baldwin. In the typed letter, Herbert asks for a privilege to be extended to his wife on account of his father's service. The handwritten response by Smith reads, "Dear Herbert, I am led to believe that the favor can be granted and after talking with Col. Patten[?] decide to make the application as soon at his suggestion. Hope it will all be satisfactory. Yours, A. L. Smith." The time at which these letters were written marks the early years of the American colonization of the Philippines. After the Spanish-American War (1898), the United States annexed the Philippines which led to the Philippine-American War (1899-1902).
