Original hand-drawn comic strip art by Al Smith for the comic strip, Mutt and Jeff. Inscribed by Al Smith to Tommy Fox: "To - Tommy Fox - With Best Wishes - Al Smith." Original black ink on white paper with white pigment for original corrections and editing. Original stickers on two of the panels have the following text: "Copyright 1973, Aedita S. de Beaumont, All World Rights Reserved" and "Trade Mark Registered, A McNaught Syndicate Feature." May 31, 1973. 20" x 6." Art is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. This is a four-panel comic strip. Panel One: Mutt is sitting down and says to Jeff who walks in with a black eye, "Wow! Where'd you get that black eye?" Jeff replies, "My girl gave it to me for being fresh." Panel Two: Mutt has a determined look on his face and lifts his right hand up with his index finger in a pointed position and says, "The best thing for a shiner is to put a piece of raw beef steak on it!" Panel Three: With his black eye clearly visible, Jeff is shown reading a sign in a storefront window that says, "Sale, Prime Beef Steak, $2.50/lb." Panel Four (open panel with no borders): A cow is shown standing with a question mark over its head while Jeff is places his black eye on its back leg. Al Smith (1902-1986) was an American cartoonist who is best-known for his long run on the Mutt and Jeff comic strip, which was created by Bud Fisher. From 1932-1980, Al Smith drew the Mutt and Jeff strip and sometimes wrote for it too. According to comics historian R. C. Harvey, Smith's nearly fifty-year run with this comic strip may be the longest in history to date.. Illustr.: Smith, Al. Comic. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
