Smith was a student at The Citadel in Charleston, SC when World War II broke out. Soon he enlisted in the Army and later found himself in OCS as an engineer. Assignments on New Guinea and the Philippines were followed by peacetime service in the Carribean, Bolivia, and the Galapagos Islands.
