The last additional page is an illustrated announcement of D. Appleton and Company's new location. Prospectus for "Herbert Spencer's Philosophical Works" printed in front. Former owner's signature in black ink in a margin on title page: "Wm. [William] M. Pierson." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Lacks front free endpaper. Slight rubbing to covers. A Very Good copy. Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) was an English philosopher, sociologist, and evolutionary theorist. Spencer's collection of essays on pedagogy. Epes Ellery's bookseller's ticket tipped in on front pastedown: "Epes Ellery, Antiquarian Book Store, Stationery, Fancy Articles, Etc., Wholesale & Retail, 225 Montgomery Street, Russ' Block, San Francisco." Epes Ellery (1830-1894) is notable for being the first antiquarian bookseller on the West Coast. He had apprenticed under bookbinders Henry Kitfield and Henry A. Gane in Boston before moving to California in 1853. In 1854, Ellery co-founded the Antiquarian Book Store with Augustus Doyle in San Francisco. In 1856, Ellery bought out Doyle and continued to operate the bookstore until 1863. Ellery subsequently retired from the book business and ventured into the real estate and mining industries.. Book.
