Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in its most collectible format, Joseph Sterling's "The Age of Adolescence". One of the best photographic records of The American Teen-ager. "This Age sparkles with the promise of what's to come, hides its insecurities under the cover of bravado, and trembles with excitement about the here and now. From 1959 to 1964 (arguably the Adolescence of America itself), Joseph Sterling photographed teenagers, hanging out after school, at drive-ins, in fast cars. As Sterling himself defined it, 'the world of the adolescent is totally interlaced within itself and incapable of freeing itself. It whirls, rolls, and engulfs what it is allowed to engulf' "(Publisher's blurb). The "Age of Adolescence" shows American kids to be both playful and serious, friendly and menacing, cheerful and pensive. Some images anticipate the work of many contemporary photographers without their necessarily being aware of it. Their remarkable simplicity and effortless grace have re-appeared in so many images of young people ever since. Still, few photographs have the timeless appeal as Joseph Sterling's work. Closely identified with the Institute of Design (ID), Sterling has done work characterized by the technical perfection and formal experimentation identified with the Bauhaus-inspired Institute. Here, he lets go, and the result is simply wonderful. The design by Dimitri Levas, the designer of Bruce Weber's books, gives this book a contemporary look and feel that are compatible with the photographs. It is also, sadly, the last book published by Sterling, who died unexpectedly on November 12, 2010. An absolute "must-have" title for Joseph Sterling collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Clamshell Box Edition, indicated, stamped, and hand-numbered as such on the front free endpaper. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Joseph Sterling. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a stunningly beautiful 10 X 14 inch original photographic print that shows two teen-agers in a public beach shower (it appears on Page 90 of the book). The print is very prominently and beautifully archived, numbered, and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer: "486-25 Joseph Sterling Limited Book Edition T. A. O. L. 11/25". This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Edition With Original Print available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: There is a second print selection available online. This is the better one. A rare signed copy thus. 128 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the finest American photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSEPH STERLING TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0972778853.
