Ist Edition. A unique copy, in an apparent trial or personal binding similar to that employed for the de-luxe edition, the raffia spine of thinner material and a different pattern to that commonly found, the cloth of pale brown rather than the dark cloth of both normal issues, with the usual picture mounted on the front board. This copy has been boldly signed by Irma Stern in the thick black ink and style associated with her finished art works. In addition, the title page has been 'converted' into a form of bookplate in pen and ink, the printed text surrounded by a double frame line, and the blank portions bearing the legend: 1962 PRETORIA BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL. THE ART DEPARTMENT. (signed) L.Scully Senior Art Master. Lawrence Scully, a noted South African artist in his own right, was the art master at that school at that date.
