TAKASHIMA, S : Illustrations of Japanese life. (cover illustration of a lantern)

K. Ogawa, Tokyo,, 1918

From the Preface by K. Ogawa: "In preparing this volume neither labour nor expense has been spared, and I send it out to the public feeling confident that no such gallery of photographs, giving the exact picture of every day life of the Japanese, has ever been presented before in one volume. Being printed by the collotype process, which has of late become very popular, the pictures herein contained are true to nature and free from any retouches by the artist. Moreover, unlike ordinary photographs, these collotype pictures are really permanent in the sense that they will not fade in any length of time." 7 leaves, 12 full-page color illustrations, pictorial wrappers, oblong. Printed by Collotype on hand-made paper. 10 x 7 1/2 in, laid out vertically with the silk ties at the long edge. Covers to the volume slightly frayed. The illustrations show Japanese men, women and children in traditional dress in 12 scenes as follows: The Suwara-Odori (A dancing), Backyard of a Tea House, Venturing out in the Rain, Sayonara (good-bye), Letter Writing, Morning Toilet, Buddhist Priests Conspicuous, Two Ladies in Full Dress, The Cherry, A Blind Street Musician, The Dai-Kagura, Japanese Babies.
