Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning internally, darkening on edges of text block, and former owners' inscriptions in black ink and pencil on front free endpaper. Covers are clean and intact overall except for bumped and rubbed corners (interior boards are visible on corners), the front having a slight lean toward fore-edge when laid flat, and light to moderate rubbing on front, back, and spine. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Memoir of Richard Taylor (1826-1879), an American politician, historian, and Confederate general. Richard was also the son of United States President Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) and the brother-in-law of Confederate States President Jefferson Davis (1808-1889). Before the Civil War, Richard served in the Louisiana State Senate from 1855-1861. During the war, Richard attained the rank of Lieutenant General and was eventually given command of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, the last major Confederate force to surrender east of the Mississippi. In this memoir, Richard recounts the surrender of his department to U.S. General Edward Canby, among many other episodes and events related to the war. Richard remained active in politics during the postwar years and spent much time and effort in opposing Reconstruction policies.
