THACKERAY, William Makepeace : THE HISTORY OF PENDENNIS

THACKERAY, William Makepeace. THE HISTORY OF PENDENNIS. His fortunes and misfortunes, his friends and his greatest enemy. With illustrations on wood by the author. In two volumes. Vol. I [& II]. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1850. First American edition. Two octavo volumes. Wood-engraved illustrations within the text. Publisher's binding; brown cloth, sides blocked in blind, gilt-stamped title to spine. Contemporary pencil ownership of Henry Winthrop Sargent, the horticulturalist, in each volume. Text leaves are unusually clean and bright overall, despite some occasional light foxing and few lightly toned gatherings in each volume. Cloth shows wear at heel, crown and corners, and Vol. 2 has light spotting to upper board, but the bindings are crisp and generally quite clean. A nice set.
