Original billhead and typed letter on beige paper with printed and typed text in black and purple ink, respectively. There is a small black and white illustration of one of the company's ranges in the upper-left corner. Datelined May 25, 1891 in Cleveland, Ohio. 8" x 10." Billhead is very clean and intact except for slight wrinkling and a few horizontal and vertical fold lines. The printed letterhead reads, "The Born Steel Range & Mfg. Co., Manufacturers of Born's Steel Plate Ranges and Bake Ovens, Hotel and Restaurant Kitchen Outfits. Also, Hot-Air Furnaces and Laundry Stoves. Tin, Copper and Sheet Iron Work. No. 128 Superior St." Additional printed information: "Established in 1847. Telephone No. 551." F. C. McMillan is listed as the company president, A. M. Metheany as the vice president, H. [Henry] Born as the manager and treasurer, and Charles B. Coon as the secretary. Letter is addressed to the Ohio Pulley & Machine Company in Warren, Ohio and reads as follows: "Gentlemen: In reply to yours of May 22nd, we would state that we will ship you back a half dozen covers for your examination, as that will give you a better knowledge than any complaint that we could make with them. Yours respectfully, The Born Steel Range & Mfg. Co." Signed by the secretary as "C. B. Coon." In 1847, The Born Steel Range & Manufacturing Company was founded in Cleveland, Ohio as a stove and tinware business. The company was named after its owner Charles P. Born, who had immigrated to the United States from Germany. Prior to Born's ownership, the company was led by John Ingersoll. Ingersoll sold his business to Born in 1859. Born established Born Steel Range at the address listed on the billhead, No. 128 Superior Street. After Charles's passing in 1876, his brothers, Frederick and Henry, would take over. Frederick passed away in 1891; Henry in 1915. In 1923, the company was renamed the Cleveland Range Company which still operates to this day.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
