The Luther Burbank Society : Original Printed Letter and Envelope - "To the Members of the Luther Burbank Society"

Original printed letter in envelope. Letter and envelope are on beige paper and have printed black lettering. Envelope is on Luther Burbank Society stationery with the society's name printed as part of the return address and a black-and-white portrait illustration of Luther Burbank on back flap. Envelope is addressed to Llewelyn T. McKee, Esq. of Philadelphia. A red, two-cent George Washington stamp is tipped in on envelope and has cancellation marks from being used. Envelope is postmarked February 25, 1915 in New York. Letter: 5 1/2" x 8 1/4." Envelope: 5" x 6 1/2." One page, complete. Letter is very clean and intact except for a microscopic closed tear at top, a horizontal fold line at center (likely original), and slight age toning. Envelope is very clean and intact but has age toning, a few wrinkles, and a closed tear slightly affecting the illustration of Burbank on flap. Letter is Near Fine. Envelope is Very Good. Letter and envelope are Very Good as a set. A letter from the Luther Burbank Society addressed to society members about the completion of a book series, the Burbank Illustrated Records, and explanation of why delivery charges for the books are not prepaid. Most of the letter lists the reasons why the delivery charges were not prepaid including a lack of funds, delinquent payments from some members, and the decision of the society to not delay shipment of the volumes which resulted in members paying the delivery charges. The society concludes the letter with an offer of refunding members the delivery charge if they want their money back, as it was the society's original intention to pay the delivery charge (but it was offset to not delay shipment according to the letter). Luther Burbank (1849-1926) was an American botanist and horticulturist who made significant contributions to the field of agricultural science. Burbank developed over 800 strains and variations of plants in his career. Among his famous strains and variations are the Shasta daisy, the Santa Rosa plum, the freestone peach, the white blackberry, and the Burbank potato.. Manuscript.
