Original billhead on beige paper with printed text and handwriting in black ink. There is a small black and white illustration that shows the storefront of the business. Datelined December 11, 1875 in San Francisco, California. 8 1/2" x 4 3/4." Billhead is very clean and intact. Paper has a few light foxing spots. The handwritten portions include the name of the customer, the item purchased, and the price of the item. The customer was "F. G. Edwards." There was one item purchased, satin. The printed letterhead reads, "The White House. [Customer] Bo't [Bought] of J. W. Davidson & Co., Importers of Foreign & Domestic Dry Goods, 101 & 103 Kearny St., N.W. Cor. Post., House in Paris 10 Rue Ste Ce'cile. Orders for European Goods promptly filled." The printer of this billhead is listed as "Bancroft's Steam Lithographic Printing House." The J. W. Davidson & Company was a clothing store founded in 1854 by J. W. Davidson and Richard Lane at the corner of Grant, Sutter, and Post Streets in San Francisco. A clerk was hired that same year, Raphael Weill (1837-1920), who came from the Lorraine region of France. After Lane entered the gold mining business in 1858, Weill took over as a partner of the company. Upon the store's move to a new location at the corner of Kearny and Post Streets, its name was changed to the White House after the famous Parisian clothing store, Maison Blanche. The White House became known for its high-quality French goods and was a prominent fixture in the shopping district of San Francisco, and Weill eventually became the sole owner of the store..
