Original billhead and typed letter on beige paper with printed text in black ink and typed text in green ink. Letterhead includes a small black and white illustration of the Thomas Phillips Company plant with the caption, "Established 1872, Incorporated 1887." Datelined September 3, 1890 in Akron, Ohio. An unfilled, printed date of "188_" is part of the letterhead. 8" x 9 1/4." Billhead is clean and intact overall. Paper has a few horizontal and vertical fold lines. The printed letterhead reads, "The Thos. Phillips. Co., Manufacturers of Paper, Flour Sack Paper and Flour Sacks." The letter is addressed to the Ohio Pulley & Machine Company in Warren, Ohio and reads, "Gentlemen: - Your favor of the 1st at hand. We do not know where you can get straw board tubing; we do not make it. Yours truly, The Thos. Phillips Co." The company President is listed as George W. Crouse. The Treasurer and General Manger is listed as Clarence Howland. Clarence Howland is of likely relation to the prominent papermakers, Enos and Amos Howland, two brothers who lived in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls/Kingsbury), Washington County, New York. After Enos and Amasa's retirement, much of their papermaking operations moved to Akron, Ohio along the Ohio Canal, where it was renamed the Thomas Phillips Company after Thomas Phillips married Amasa's daughter. Phillips was the company's manager until his passing in 1878. The Thomas Phillips Company remained one of Akron's oldest firms until it closed its doors in 1957.. Ephemera.
