Pugilism,deep-sea fishing for pilchards and the conflicts within the Methodist Church provide the background themes of this latest novel (then 1985).On a wild night a very young boy is rescued from a ship-wreck by Nathan. The boy's mother is drowned.Jean-Paul - as the boy is called -becomes an adopted child of Amy and Nathan Jago in their manor house at Polrudden. The child saved from the wreck is to have a dramatic impact on the future of Polrudden and it is not long before Nathan finds himself in Paris,in the company of a glamorous French aristocrat, the Marquise d'Orleans.Torn between his love for Amy and the exciting fascination of Henrietta,it is Polrudden, the ancient manor house, which decides Nathan's future. The drama of life and survival in Cornwall in the years 1813-1815 pervades the story, revealing fascinating historical details of the Cornish working-class struggle at this time, but the greater European story also impinges. Nathan encounters courtiers from the courts of Louis XVIII and Napoleon Bonaparte, meeting both King and Emperor. See also rja22196 - rja22216 for author's other titles.
