The poems of Emily Dickinson were not published during her lifetime.After her death in 1886,manuscripts were found by her sister Lavinia and who requested Millicent Todd's mother Mabel Loomis Todd to undertake publication.With Thomas Wentworth Higginson Mabel brought out a first volume containing 116 poems,in 1890, and 'Poems, Second Series',in 1891.Without his help,she then published two volumes of letters, containing more than a hundred additional poems,in 1894,and then,'Poems,Third Series',in 1896.Then,abruptly, Mabel's work stopped.She was alienated by a lawsuit about a strip of land,brought against her by none other than Lavinia Dickinson.As a consequence,nearly half of Emily's poems have remained unpublished to this day (then 1944/5).
