Visually the exterior appearance is spectacular for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. 'The Turn of the Wheel' covers the turbulent interrgnum which began when hostilities came to an end in November 1918,and continues until the beginning of World War Two in 1939.With the signing of the Armistice another era in the life of the Army had passed. The horse,so long the mainstay of transport in the Army, was being replaced by the lorry; mechanisation was the byword and the Royal Army Service Corps was in the forefront of the development of mechanical transport, with all its attendant challenges of training, manpower and maintenance. The development of wheeled vehicles capable of moving off roads, with the introduction of multi-axle drive and pneumatic tyres, were to restore mobility to the battlefield. The widespread use of motor transport led to the prime importance of the provision and handling of supplies of fuel, and influenced the strategic importance of the oilfields. Thus as an army could no longer fight,or even exist, without supplies and transport, the activities of the RASC,which provided both,is a history of the activities of the Army as a whole. Although expenditure on the Armed Forces was severely restricted while disarmament was the cry,and in the face of widespread pacifism and a spirit of appeasement, there were those who understood what was happening.Despite shortages of equipment and manpower,by the time the crises of 1938 and 1939 were upon us,the training of the Army's Transport and Supply service for its role in WW2 was both realistic and imaginative. This account gives a fascinating new insight into the personalities and events which made this possible.
