Front free endpaper has a piece of the upper-right corner torn off measuring about 4 1/2" x 3 1/4." Light foxing on several pages but text is still readable. This book contains Congressional proceedings about the reception and acceptance of the Ulysses S. Grant statue created by Franklin Simmons (1839-1913), a sculptor whose work brought him great acclaim. Simmons was commissioned by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) to create a statue of Grant that would be given by them to U.S. Congress. Simmons's statue of Grant currently resides in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Some of his other works are also housed in the National Statuary Hall Collection and the United States Senate Vice Presidential Bust Collection. GAR was a fraternal organization that was founded in 1866. Members of the organization included military veterans of the Union Army, Union Navy, U.S. Marines, and the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.
