VARDON,HARRY: : THE COMPLETE GOLFER

LONDON.METHUEN & CO.,LTD.,1917.

UK,8vo HB,no dw/dj - as issued?,15th edn.[1st edn was 1905 plus 5 other edns in same year,an edn in each of the following 2 years,2 edns in 1908,2 edns in 1911,one in 1912.The 14th edn was completely revised, enlarged and rewritten in 1914.This copy is the first edition since that revision, published January,1917.]VG.No owner inscrptn, but residue of bookplates/labels(?) to front pastedown, and residue of paper label to spine/backstrip also - but NO indications,i.e alpha-numerical marks or inked/ embossed library stamps to any pages or photographs to indicate that it was ever an ex-library copy - still in publisher's original cloth bds! [I have seen and handled several, previous edns in library bindings, usually always in a different colour to publisher's original cloth binding.]Generally clean, publisher's original green cloth bds with negligible shelf-wear,some inevitable bumping, rubbing to corners+edges, some miniscule fraying to some corners, edges and head+foot of spine/backstrip. Stamped, lined border and title+author letters to upper bd oxidised, but non-oxidised stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip.Bookseller's maroon+gilt dentelle to foot of front pastedown (Gieves Ltd., Booksellers and Stationers Portsmouth),minus ffe causing front hinge to be cracked and slightly loose.Top edge trimmed,dust-soiled and slightly darkened with some minimal, sporadic foxing/spotting; fore-edge untrimmed, but considerably cleaner but still lightly aged/tanned,contents generally bright, tight and clean. There is also removed and missing 4 prelimary pages (assumed previous edns prefaces) after the title-page and before the subsequent preface to the revised edn.8vo,vi-xviii+1-340pp [paginated] includes rev edn and 1st edn prefaces, contents+illus+diagrams lists/tables,23 chapters, Rules of the Game appendix, and index.57 contemporary b/w photograph plates,7 b/w line diagrams - all present and called for throughout the text and the book plus [unpaginated] half-title recto of same, publisher's advert for other books from the Complete Series;tissue-guard b/w photogravure frntis (author portrait with facsimile signature beneath) and title-page.The tissue guard is tanned, which in turn has off-set foxed the frntis and the title-page.The appendix includes also rules for match play competitions,three-ball,best-ball + four-ball matches, special rules for stroke competitions, rules for bogey comps, recommendations for local rules, form and make of golf clubs, and finally the single + foursome match play handicap allowances. Decribed hard but fairly and honestly.Even with the missing ffe+4 pages, still an acceptable, desirable, uncommon edition. The best instructional golf book and an acknowledged masterpiece of the genre, and most succesful book of this genre (then 1905) on golf. Harry Vardon(1870-1937),English golfer who won the British Open 6 times, the American and German Open. Harry Vardon was Open champion 1896-1898 - 1899-1903 and American champion in 1900.Credited with developing the overlapping grip. Here Vardon offers valuable advice on driving, putting, the use of each club, course maintenance, along with anecdotes, other golfers, etc. Tiger Woods continues setting the golf world afire through his incredible talent for the game.Few golfers would dare claim greater ability in hitting that dimpled little round ball, but one who easily can was Harry Vardon. In addition to Woods,Vardon's achievements are best compared to those of Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus when discussing the history of golf;but Vardon easily transcends even Jones and Nicklaus in his overall contributions to the game. Vardon possessed even more talents than those he showed with such verve on the course. He wrote classic books on golf (such as this one), popularized the overlapping grip known worldwide as the 'Vardon' grip;used by 70% of all golfers;and designed golf courses still in play today.Throughout his life he displayed a consistent passion and love of the game and has contributed immensely to it.The sun no longer always shines on the British Empire, but somewhere in the world every day,on a sun drenched field of lush green grass, golfers vigorously address golf balls using the Vardon grip. Since April,2013,the UK Post Office has increased it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too!
