The first part of this volume is a detailed account of an arctic expedition undertaken by Sir William Parry (1790-1855), English Rear-Admiral and famous Arctic explorer, and his crew in 1819. The purpose of the expedition was to find the Northwest Passage. They sailed through what is now known as Parry Channel, as far west as Melville Island in the modern province of Nunavut. This was the furthest west anyone would sail in the Canadian Arctic until 1850. They were blocked by ice and had to winter on Melville Island for 10 months. While there, a newspaper, called the North Georgia Gazette and Winter Chronicle, was produced to help entertain and inform the crew. The text of this newspaper is reproduced in the second part of this volume. This book is a very attractive and vital piece of the history of Arctic exploration.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
