The Prince of Wales's impassioned concern for the quality of the environment is well known, but few are aware of the fact that for twenty years he has found private expression for his love of the countryside through the medium of watercolour painting. It was not so long ago,of course, that drawing was regarded as an integral part of a civilised person's education, and sketching and painting equipment was included in the luggage of any cultivated traveller. The Prince is thus continuing a time-honoured tradition, and the intense feeling revealed in his paintings for the landscape both in Britain and abroad, shows that the roots of his conservationist instincts go deep. In allowing more than seventy of his paintings from the last five years (then 1991) to be included in this book, the Prince is sharing a very private part of his life - a part that,as he reveals in his Introduction and the extended captions accompanying the reproductions, brings him immesnse pleasure and considerable satisfaction. The result is a uniquely individual and personal album. Many of the paintings depict the majestic scenery around Balmoral or the tranquil Norfolk countryside in all seasons, whie other British scenes range from the intimacy of Prince Albert's litchen garden at Windsor to the sweeping grandeur of Wensleydale. There are also views of Italy,France, and Spain,as well as memorable images from the Middle East and as far afield as Hong Kong and the Serengeti Plain. Showing an assurance that many watercolourists will envy, these paintings bear out the view, shared by the Prince, that the very best way to observe, appreciate, and enjoy nature fully is to try to paint it.His work will surely encourage others to try their hand at this difficult, yet excitingly spontaneous, medium.
