Webb, Maria : The Fells of Swarthmoor Hall and their friends, with an account of their ancestor Anne Askew, the Martyr. A Portraiture of religious and family life in the 17th century, compiled chiefly from original letters and other documents never before published

Alfred W Bennett, London / J Robertson, Dublin, 1865

434 pages (complete). One of the great Quaker histories. The Fells of Cumbria were among the original founders of the Quakers. This history by Maria Webb is famous, not only for being one of the earliest histories, but also for its diligence, detail and breadth of reference and resource. This copy has been much owned and most neglectfully stored. The cover is heroic. The spine is injured but resilient to all assaults from its enemies and is firm and hale. The covers are cracked, worn and scrappy but also sure. Within, the contents have evidence of usage, but they are otherwise kindly, generous, devoted, clear and comfortable. It may still be read and enjoyed with ease. fk. Book Condition: Poor. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
