Black leather spine label with gilt lettering. Top edge stained blue. Slipcase measures 8" x 11 1/2." Book measures 7 3/4" x 11." 274 pages (paginated up to Page 230), complete. Nineteen woodcuts (seven color plates and twelve black-and-white illustrations), complete. Pages and covers are virtually pristine and intact. Binding is tight. Slipcase is very clean and intact except for slight age toning at the edges. A seemingly unread, As New copy. A reprint of the first biography of George Washington by Mason Locke Weems (1759-1825), commonly known as Parson Weems. Back colophon: "This edition of The Life of Washington was planned by Richard Ellis and composed under his supervision by W. Carlton Stremic in Philadelphia. Two thousand copies have been printed from type for the Members of The Limited Editions Club, at the Press of A. Colish, Mount Vernon, New York. The illustrations were cut in wood by Robert Quackenbush who here signs this copy, [Robert Quackenbush], which is Number 1353." An original envelope with two enclosed documents from the Limited Editions Club is laid in. One document is the four-page Monthly Letter that provides an overview of Weems and the book. The other document is one page and discusses the specifications of the book: "Number Ten; The tenth, in the Forty-first Series of fine books made for the members of this Club, is The Life of Washington by the Rev. Mason L. Weems, with an introduction by Henry Steele Commager. To illustrate the volume, Robert Quackenbush has created a double-spread and seven full-page two-color woodcuts, and twelve half-page black-and-white woodcuts. The format was designed by Richard Ellis, who specified twelve-point Monotype Modern 8A type with three points of leading for the text. As chapter-head decorations he created a wreath of thirteen stars encircling a number-line set in eighteen-point Caslon Open; the chapter initials are in thirty-six point Caslon Open. The page size is 7 1/2" x 10 3/4" inches, and there are 274 pages. The text was composed by W. Carlton Stremic in Philadelphia and printed at The Press of A. Colish in Mount Vernon, New York, where the woodcuts were printed under the artist's supervision. The paper is a soft rag cloth, specially made for this edition at the Curtis mill in Newark, Delaware. The edition is bound in a 100% American cotton printed with an allover colonial pattern.
