Weineck, Wolf (organiser) : Living Arts 27 Oct. - 11 Nov. 1978

Michael Mount Waldorf School, Bryanston, Transvaal, South Africa, 1978

44 pages (complete). An absolutely UNIQUE book that accompanied the fourth Living Arts Biennale Exhibition in Johannesburg. The exhibition was organised to raise funds for the Waldorf School in Bryanston and aimed to represent and show works from international and local artists. This particular exhibition was exceptional in the number of black artists included. This opportunity was afforded when many white artists declined to participate on the grounds that they would not make enough money! At the height of apartheid repression and censoring of expression and creativity the mixing of black and white art was exceptionally rare. It is perhaps instructive to note that many of the black artists came from Swaziland. Many of the local artists were emerging in their own rights in their own fields, ranging from woodworking to weaving, from silvercraft to ceramics. This exhibition hosted 20 artists. This brochure is UNMATCHED AND UNIQUE in many ways. Not only does it have the SIGNATURES OF 14 OF THE ARTISTS, it also has TWO ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART and the FINGERPRINT of one the exhibitors. Weineck was the founder of the Market Galley in 1977. His gallery was critical in the promotion and development of South African art in all its forms. Its role is considered irreplaceable and particular. He was particularly pleased to stage this multi-racial event. The artists were: ceramasist HAROLD (HAL) RIEGGER (signature), sculptor LUCAS SITHOLE, woodcarver MTHUNZI NKOSI DLAMINI (signature), potter DIGBY HOETS (fingerprint in clay PLUS signature), bauernmalarei expert ELFRIEDE JOHAM-STIEGMEIER (signature), artist HARALD PH. MICHEL, potter AUSTIN HLEZA (signature), stained-glass worker STEPHANIE FASSLER-ROSS, block-printer GRACE SLOMAN (signature), weaver STANISLAWA SKOLIMOWSKA (signature), artist JASCHA, teacher and artist ROBERT REEDY (signature), metalworker GUNNAR OLOFSSON (signature), silversmith PATRICK FAKUDZE (signature), spinner and weaver MAPHOKO ELIZABETH NQAI, spinner and weaver CHRISTINE LERATO RAMPHEANE (signature), handworker LOUISE HECKL, iconographer and painter JUDITH MASON (inscription and signature), metal artist RONALD ROSENBERG (signature), stone artist KNUT ALBRECHT (signature). What also makes this brochure absolutely SINGULAR is that the inside front cover has A WATERCOLOUR PAINTING by and signed and dated by ROBERT REEDY. The title page has a PRINT BLOCK ILLUSTRATION which is unsigned but likely from GRACE SLOMON. The cover is intact and whole even if creased and marked. The pages bear evidence of handling throughout but are clear, robust and confident. A VERY SPECIAL, ONE OF A KIND brochure. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Soft cover. Jacket: No Jacket
