Edward Pellew, the first Viscount Exmouth, served as a commander aboard several ships during the American and French Revolutionary and later Napoleonic Wars. He was made Admiral in 1804, and made Viscount Exmouth in 1816 for having liberated 1,000 Christian slaves after attacking a North African city. By the end of his life, he had been awarded several awards and appointed to a number of highly honoured orders from Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, Sicily, Sardinia and Savoy.
