Very minor browning along folds, with a minor tear along the central fold; all things considered, a very good copy of this first printing by North America’s (arguably) longest-running newspaper., Folio., P. 4 pp., “To the Publick” and “Au Public” printed in a single column; the rest is printed in double columns.
This is a reprint of the first printing made by the Quebec Gazette at its 100-year anniversary (1864). It is now the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. In it, the publishers outline their mission statement (to represent the truth, to avoid partisanship, etc.), then briefly summarize the situation in several European cities, proceeding to point out the ongoing debate in British Parliament about the taxation of the American colonies, and then print a letter from a resident of Virginia indicating a “late incursion” of Indians into his region. This is followed by three advertisements, one for the custom-house, one for the upcoming St. John festival, and the last for the merchant John Baird. Although the entire paper is printed both in French and English, the ad for the St. John festival (an important Quebec holiday) is only printed in English.
The newspaper makes the claim to be the longest-running North American newspaper, having only paused publication during the 1775 Siege of Quebec, whereas other publications contesting the claim were paused for longer periods of time throughout their histories.
