James Wyld, and later his son, ran one of the most successful map publishers in London during the 1820s and 1830s. James senior began by succeeding to the business of William Faden in 1823. He continued to issue high quality detailed maps and atlases for several years thereafter. Both father and son held the post of Geographer Royal and the father was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society. "Wyld quickly appreciated the market potential of maps of areas being opened up by exploration and colonization and for several decades the firm was noted for the authority of its maps of such areas. achieving a world wide reputation for excellence" (Smith). This very large scale map is effectively of modern day Sierra Leone. The city of Freetown is in the centre left of the map It was founded in 1792 by freed American slaves. It has the oldest University in West Africa which was founded in 1827 just before the map was published. The detail is drawn from 'Travels in the Timanee, Kooranko and Soolima Countries ...' by Alexander Gordon Laing, 1825 and the account of Brian O'Beirne account of his travels along the Gambia River. The map shows the routes of the explorers Wall and Winterbottom (1794), O'Beirne (1821) and Laing and le Bore (1822). An inset at the bottom details the trade and population of Sierra Leone from 1817 to 1825. An example of the 1830 has been located in the British Library and later editions are at Cambridge and Oxford. None other could be located.
