Original Printed and Handwritten Marriage License Between Manuel Lee and Margaret Rogers, Sacramento County, 1912

Imprint: 1912

Original marriage license between two early Sacramento residents, Manuel Lee (1885-1945) and Margaret Rogers (1894-1978). Printed lettering and handwriting in black ink. 15" x 13 1/2." Marriage license is very clean and intact except for a few wrinkles, a few bumps along the edges, and slight age toning. A Very Good copy. A marriage license between Manuel Lee and Margaret Rogers of Sacramento. The license reads that Manuel and Margaret are both residents of Sacramento County and that they got married on May 18, 1912. The two witnesses are named as Frank Lee and Emma Rogers, the latter of whom was one of Margaret's sisters. There are signatures of the Deputy Clerk and the reverend who oversaw the marriage of Manuel and Margaret. There is limited online documentation of Manuel Lee, but Margaret Rogers came from a family who was among the first to arrive in the Pocket area of Sacramento. Margaret's father, Albert Mendes, and his two brothers, John and Joseph Mendes, immigrated to the United States from the island of Pico in the Azores, Portugal. Upon arriving in the U.S., Albert changed his last name to "Rodgers" (with a later spelling change to "Rogers") and John took the surname of "Potter." Joseph retained his original surname of "Mendes." All three brothers made their way to the Pocket area and likely worked as laborers on local ranches to make a living. Albert eventually acquired enough money to buy his own ranch. He married Rose Gear, another immigrant from the Azores. Margaret was one of Albert and Rose's eight children, all of whom were raised on the family ranch. As this marriage certificate shows, Margaret married Manuel in 1912. They had four children, Laverne, Agnes, Gertrude, and Dorothy. However, the couple later divorced, and Margaret married Tony Machado.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
