Another certificate (1882) is completely split down the middle vertically but the actual pieces are intact. The Putnam Phalanx was a quasi-military, honor guard, and social organization based in Hartford, Connecticut that promoted patriotism and patriotic aspects of United States history. The Putnam Phalanx was founded in 1858 in order to escort Thomas H. Seymour (1807-1868), a lawyer and politician, from Hartford. Military regalia was sometimes worn, but the Putnam Phalanx never saw combat. Its members ranged from military service members, to governors, generals, and state officials. In 1931, the Putnam Phalanx merged with the Connecticut National Guard and maintained operations until 2007. All of the documents, with the exception of a leaf for the Israel Putnam Memorial Camp Ground Commission, address Thomas Dowd. The Israel Putnam Memorial Camp Ground Commission document lists the organization's top officials, the towns where they live, and the location of the organization (in Redding and Bethel, Connecticut). This document is undated. Most of the remaining documents are certificates belonging to Dowd. Collection of Nine Original Photographs in Occupied Japan (Tokyo, Christmas Day, 1945)

Collection of nine original black-and-white photographs of places in postwar occupied Japan. All of the photographed subjects are in Tokyo. Emphasis is on city scenes and buildings. No date, circa 1945. 6" x 4 1/4." Each photo is very clean and intact except for the occasional small mark and slightly bumped corners. Near Fine copies. The titles name the depicted subject. The titles are printed on the front of each photo as follows: "'Sanshin Bilding [sic],' Tokyo"; "'Shirokiya' Department Store, Tokyo"; "Parliament House, Tokyo"; "The News Factory, 'Asahi' Shinbun [sic], Tokyo"; "X' Mas Day at Tokyo, 1945"; "X' Mas Day at Tokyo, 1945" [another view of the same building]; "Ginza, Tokyo"; "Ginza Street, Tokyo"; and "Imperial Palace." The following is a description or history about each subject. The Sanshin Building was built c. 1930. It was later demolished in 2007 to make way for the new Tokyo Midtown Hibiya, a multi-use development with office, commercial, dining, and entertainment venues, which was completed in 2018. Parts of the new interior architecture mimic the curves of the original Sanshin Building. The Shirokiya Department Store was founded in 1662 as a dry goods store. It expanded its product line over the centuries. However, beginning in the twentieth century, a series of natural and man-made disasters as well as WWII and the postwar Allied Occupation of Japan brought ruin to the company. To prevent a hostile takeover, Shirokiya merged with Tokyu Group in 1958. In 1959, Shirokiya's first location outside of Japan opened at the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Eventually, Tokyu chose to sell Shirokiya, which resulted in Ala Moana Center being the only Shirokiya location to this day. The Parliament House is currently known as the National Diet Building. It was built in 1936 and still stands to this day. As the name suggests, it is where both legislative houses of the National Diet of Japan meet. Asahi Shimbun is one of four major newspapers in Japan and one of its oldest newspapers, being founded in 1879. It is unclear if the depicted newspaper building still stands to this day; Asahi Shimbun headquarters are currently located at the Nakanoshima Festival Tower which was completed in 2017. The first "X'mas Day" photo shows a large crowd of people gathered outside of a building with a sign that reads, "Merry X'mas." The other "X'mas Day" photo shows another view of the same building from the front that was taken from farther away and shows a pond or waterway in the foreground. There are two photos depicting Ginza. Ginza is a district in Tokyo; the first photo focuses on the district's famous landmark, Wako store (Ginza Wako), which was founded in 1881. Wako is still open to this day and sells luxury goods such as watches, jewelry, handbags, chocolate, and dishware. The Wako buildings functioned as a PX store (military general store) from 1945-1952 during the occupation. The other "Ginza" photo shows a bustling street scene in Ginza district. The "Imperial Palace" photo shows a view of the Tokyo Imperial Palace (background) and the famous Seimon Ishibashi stone bridge (foreground) which leads to palace's front gates. The photo was taken from the vantage point of the moat. The palace was built on the site of the former Edo Castle, which, in turn, had been built in 1457. The palace can still be visited today.. Collection of Twelve Original Photographs of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire

Collection of twelve original black-and-white photographs of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. No date, circa 1906. 5" x 3 1/2." Photographs are clean and intact overall as a collection but are fairly fragile. All of the photos have slight rippling. Some have more damage than others. The most severe damage appears on a few photos where there appear to be spots of dampstaining or rubbing (possibly from the chemical process of making the photos) on the surface. A few also have small chips and closed tears along the edges. Each photo is Good and Good as an entire collection. These twelve photographs capture the aftermath of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Three of the photos are duplicates of two compositions, so there are nine unique compositions in total. The nine compositions are summarized as follows: (1) panorama of the leveled city with the ruins of City Hall in the background, (2) corner view of damaged building with horse-drawn wagon in front, (3) corner view of a severely damaged bell tower, (4) damaged Central Bank building with man and woman in foreground [three copies], (5) view of Market Street with Monadnock Building in background [two copies], (6) close-up view of City Hall ruins with focus on its damaged tower and rotunda, (7) panoramic city view of leveled blocks and intersection in lower-left corner, (8) "straight-shot" view of people walking on a ruined street, possibly Market Street, and (9) panoramic city view as seen from a damaged rooftop (scorch marks and other fire damage fairly visible on the roof). On April 18, 1906, an earthquake with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9 devastated the city of San Francisco. It is thought that the ensuing fire caused most of the damage to the city. Casualties numbered more than 3,000 and about eighty percent of the city was destroyed. The 1906 earthquake still has the designation of being California's deadliest natural disaster.. Photo 3 was taken from under the arcade with one of its arches framing a view of the rain-covered courtyard with a planter at center. A sense of silence fills each scene as there are no people pictured in the courtyard. If the date of the photo is correct, a possible reason for this is that the Inner Quad had not yet been completed. The Inner Quad was completed the same year as the university's opening in 1891. The Quad, with its sandstone walls and red tiled roofs, among other elements, is an excellent showcase of Stanford University's signature architectural style inspired by Romanesque and Mission Revival architecture. The overall campus of Stanford University and its Main Quad (comprising the Inner and Outer Quads) were designed by landscape architect Frank Law Olmsted (1822-1903), a landscape architect who had co-designed New York's Central Park with Calvert Vaux; Calvin A. Coolidge (1858-1936), an architect who was a partner of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge; and Leland Stanford (1824-1893), the founder of the university who had it built in memory of his only child, Leland Stanford, Jr. (1868-1884).. Collection of Six Original Photographs Showing the Building of the Concorde Supersonic Aircraft

Collection of six original black-and-white photographs showing the construction of a Concorde supersonic airliner and a Concorde scale model. Aside from the photo of the Concorde mock-up, the photos may show the Concorde 002, the first British-made prototype of the Concorde and the second Concorde prototype ever built. No date, circa 1965. Photo sizes are 6 1/4" x 4" and 8 1/2" x 4." Photos are very clean and intact overall except for slight wear and tiny bumps to edges and corners, slight age toning (more apparent on back), the photographer's handwriting in red or maroon pen on back which shows slightly onto front as indented lettering, and a few faint surface scratches and smudges. Each of the photos and the entire collection are Very Good, almost Near Fine. A stunning collection of photos providing a glimpse into a significant part of aviation history, the construction of the Concorde. The Concorde was an airliner noted for its sleek design and ability to reach supersonic speeds. The fastest recorded flight of the Concorde between New York City and London was just under two hours and fifty-three minutes (regular subsonic aircraft would typically take seven hours). The Concorde was jointly developed and manufactured by France's Sud Aviation (later Aerospatiale) and Britain's British Aircraft Corporation (BAC; later British Aerospace and BAE Systems). Construction for the first two Concorde prototypes began in February 1965. The first Concorde protoype was named Concorde 001 and built in Toulouse, France. Concorde 002 was built at the Filton Aerodrome (Filton Airport) in Filton, England. Concorde 001 made its maiden flight on March 2, 1969. Concorde 002's first flight took place on April 9, 1969 from Filton Aerodrome to RAF Fairford. All subsequent British-made Concorde airplanes made their first flight on the main runway at Filton Aerodrome. The following is a summary of the photos, each of which are numbered with the subject in brackets and the former owner's description. 1) [Completed Concorde surrounded by a crowd of people; "Sud Aviation France - British Aircraft Corporation" visible on its side]: "Filton, new supersonic Concorde on the line. Pilot sits 45' up." 2) [Illuminated Concorde in a dark hangar]: "Filton Airdrome [sic], side view of the Concorde, showing two engines & delta swept back wing." 3) [Concorde being built in a hangar]: "Filton, supersonic Concorde under construction." 4) [Another view of the Concorde under construction in the hangar]: "hull and tail section more visible." 5) [Oblique view of the nose of a Concorde model illuminated in a dark hangar]: "Filton Air Terminal, It's utterly fantastic. Actual size mock up of the Concorde. Here we climb the 45' height stairway to enter actual cabin (completed) setting. Camera (wide angle 21 MM) had to be tilted to captivate entire scene. They bathe the entire plane with blue lights (for outer space effect). It will fly from Miami to London in 4 hours." 6) [Wide-angle, semi-panoramic view of the Concorde under construction in the hangar]: "Filton Airdrome [sic], 1 of 2 scenes, it was said to be the largest hangar in the world. Note size of DC-6 left of picture for comparison. Concorde pilot section constructed separately in foreground. Hi [sic] scaffold indicates tail section. Two men can be seen in center of [pit?] standing on the delta wing.". Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding

Collection of Eight Original Radio Typescripts (Eight Copies for Max J. West) for the Shows, "My Children," "The Architect Speaks," "Stampeders' Birthday Party, " and "Beethoven," c. 1930s-1940s

Collection of eight original radio typescripts for Max J. West of San Francisco. 1939-1940 and undated (c. 1930s-1940s). Some scripts note the radio station as KSFO, San Francisco. 8 1/2" x 11." Two scripts are missing pages (see Nos. 3 and 7 below). Scripts are clean and intact overall but all pages are age-toned and several have faint dampstaining at top, rust stains from paperclips and staples, dog-eared corners, a few wrinkles, and staple holes. Good copies. The scripts are for the shows, "My Children" (four scripts/programs), "The Architect Speaks" (two scripts; presented by State Association of California Architects), "Stampeders' Birthday Party" (one script) and Jack Bennett's "Beethoven" (one script). These scripts are copies for Max J. West. The name, "Max," appears in both "The Architect Speaks" scripts but it is unclear if this name refers to West. "My Children" is a drama about a couple, Ethel and Gordon Gilman, and their children. "The Architect Speaks" promotes architects and tries to remove the mystery surrounding the field. "Stampeders' Birthday Party" is a historical fiction. "Beethoven" is a dress rehearsal. The following is a brief summary for each script. 1) "My Children," October 17, 1939, thirteen pages, including ad for Sperry Flour Co.'s "Wheat Hearts": Gordon Gilman's unscrupulous manager, Singleton, conspires with a stock promoter, Parker, to lure Gordon into a fraudulent investment scheme in order to get him fired from his job. 2) "My Children," April 18, 1940, thirteen pages, including ad for Sperry Flour Co.'s "Drifted Snow": Ethel and Gordon's son, Stan Gilman, dreams of becoming a surgeon but he cannot afford medical school. In his frustration, Stan goes to Carpenter's Pool Hall where he has a chance meeting with the suspicious Dr. Kalmus. Kalmus and Stan's conversation is interrupted when the shady lawyer, Murray Travers, appears. 3) "My Children," April 19, 1940, twelve pages (incomplete in back), including ad for Sperry Flour Co.'s "Drifted Snow": Kalmus continues his conversation with Travers. Travers uses blackmail concerning a Dr. Roberts to coerce Kalmus into working for him for an illicit scheme. 4) "My Children," April 26, 1940, thirteen pages, including ad for Sperry Flour Co.'s "Drifted Snow": Stan is now working for Dr. Kalmus but is unaware of his and Travers's scheme to steal Patricia Allen's inheritance by using a look-alike, Madeleine Carstairs. Stan has a chance meeting with Carstairs who, after some hesitation, plans to tell Stan the truth about Kalmus. 5) "The Architect Speaks," "August 4, 1940, eleven pages: Story about an architect who discusses design options with a prospective client, Marjorie, who is seeking her dream house with her husband, Tom. 6) "The Architect Speaks," August 11, 1940, thirteen pages: A critique of cookie-cutter homes is followed by a continuation of last week's story. The architect now tries to convince Tom, the husband of Helen (formerly named Marjorie), to hire him for designing their dream home. 7) "Stampeders' Birthday Party," c. 1930s-1940s, seven pages (incomplete in back): Historical fiction about Rowland Hill and the first postage stamps. 8) "Beethoven," November 7, 1940, twenty-eight pages: dress rehearsal for Jack Bennett's "Beethoven.". Binding: Hardback

Collection of two black-and-white photographs mounted on beige matboard. One photo shows a Victorian-style house under construction. The other photo is a group portrait showing five members of the Wood family. The photo of the house is mounted on beige matbord with gray decorative border printed on front. The family photo is mounted on beige matboard with gilt edging. No dates, circa 1908 (house photo has a caption with the year, 1908). House photo: 6 1/2" x 4 1/4" on 9" x 7" board. Family photo: 7 1/4" x 9 1/4" on 7 3/4" x 10" board. Photos are very clean and intact except for light rubbing, several faint scratch marks on front, and a few light smudges. Boards are clean and intact overall but have browning, a few small chips to corners and edges, a small closed tear on gray board, and some surface marks and scratches. Each photo and the entire collection are Very Good. A collection of two photos relating to the Wood family. Both matboards have handwritten ink captions on back that describe the subject of the photos. The photo of the house shows a Victorian-style house under construction in Nelson, Nebraska with three people visible in the frame. Annotations on the front of this photo's matboard identifies these people. The man on the roof of the house is "Bert Kinney," the man on the porch is "Grandpa Wood," and the man standing in the rightmost window is "Jesse Wood." The caption on the back of this photo's matboard reads, "Home we built in Nelson, 1908." The family photo shows five sitters wearing formal attire in what looks like a formal studio background or domestic interior. Two men stand in the back row while two women and a man are seated in the front row. The sitters are identified by handwritten text on back, part of which reads, "Grandpa Wood & brothers & sisters." There are five names next to this part of the text, which are "[--?] Wood" [one of the men], "Winfield Wood," "Gregory Wood," "Louisa Wood," and "Alma Wood." It is unclear which of the names is that of "Grandpa Wood," and the names are not matched to the sitters on front.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding

Collection of Eight Original Cartes de Visite Photographs - Portraits of Composers Taken from Original Portrait Paintings

Imprint: Berlin, Germany, E. H. Schroeder; H. Kuntzmann & Co.

Text in German. Collection of eight original black-and-white cartes de visite (CDV). Each CDV in this collection shows a portrait of famous composer taken from an original portrait painting. Copyright information in German is printed on back of each CDV. No date, circa 1860s. 2 1/2" x 4." Each CDV is very clean and intact except for slight age toning or darkening, slight surface wear to front and back, minuscule edge wear, and a few faint spots. Each CDV and the entire collection are Very Good. A charming collection of eight original cartes de visite which each show a portrait of a famous composer. The composers are Franz Schubert (1787-1828), Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Richard Wagner (1813-1883), and Carl von Weber (1786-1826). All of the CDVs were published by E. H. Schroeder except for the one showing Carl von Weber which was published by H. Kuntzmann & Company. Both publishers were based in Berlin, Germany. The CDV with Carl von Weber is also the only one that does not have the composer's name printed on the back. The carte de visite was a type of small photograph that was first patented by Andre Adolphe Eugene Disderi in 1854 but first used by Louis Dodero. CDVs typically took the form of small, thin albumen prints that were taken from collodion negatives and then mounted on thicker cardstock. Portraits were a common subject of CDVs. CDVs were most popular during the 1860s and saw a general decline beginning in the 1870s upon the advent of the cheaper tintype and larger cabinet card.. Photographic Image.
