Oblong folio, flexible thin brown textured leather, binding deteriorating, block sound. Pages with captions hand lettered in white; circular black picture corners. 561 gelatin silver print photographs, skillfully executed, 13 x 8 cm. for the most part. The first blank recto bears the title "Around The World: ... A trip leaving New York July 23rd 1910 and arriving at San Francisco July 6th 1911." A huge amount of images with travelers chronicling both the people and places they encounter. Images/places include Stavanger, Norway (lovely scenes of fjords and countryside); Moscow and St. Petersburg (portraits of Russian sailors, St. Basil's, the Kremlin); Warsaw (the Jewish quarter, street scenes); Budapest (churches, the Danube); Salzburg (Mozart's house, Oberammergau); the Bavarian mountains; the Tyrolean Alps; Verona (the ancient Roman theatre); Rome (the Palatine, the Coliseum); Port Said and Luxor, Egypt (the Pyramids, the Sphinx, shipbuilding and boats on the Nile, Luxor's streets, the temples at Harhor and Karnak), the island of Phylae and the Assouan Dam; Ceylon (Tamil people, working elephants, shrines and temples); Madura, Hyderabad, Tanjore, The Langar, Golconda, Ahmedelad, Jodhpur, Delhi, Lahore, Peshawar, Fatehpur Sikri, Benares, and Darjeeling, India (Jain temples, street scenes, snake charmers, Jama Musjid, Afghani travelers, beggars, Akbar's Tomb, funeral pyres by the Ganges); Burma (a monastery, pagodas); Penang, Malaysia (temple gardens); Canton, China (harbor views); Macao (fishing and street scenes); Manila, Mt. Mayou, The Phillipines (town and country views); and finally, Kyoto, Japan (temples, a tea house, Nara). On the last page of photographs a few pictures are missing from their corners, and captions remain. The captions themselves recall the colonialism of the times, especially when referring to indigenous people in Asia. Throughout the album the captions have occasionally faded, but most are legible. Pages are in good condition, as are most of the photographs, with some occasional creasing where the photo has escaped its corners at some point.
