Anders, Curt and The editors Of The Army Times : Warrior. the Story of General George S. Patton

G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1967

223 pages, well illustrated, cloth, DJ, very good. From Kirkus Reviews: "Researcher Curt Anders (Fighting Generals) and the editors of The Army Times produce a remarkably affectionate portrait of crusty, gruff ""Old Blood and Guts"" General George Patton. Much of this will be a revelation to those who think of generals in stereotypes. Patton fit the stereotype as if tailored to it, but he also ripped its seams. Many Americans became violently aware of him when headlines exploded that he had slapped a hospitalized GI who had ""battle fatigue." " Patton's explanation to Eisenhower was that a paternal swat often helped people recover from a similar hysteria of fatigue (perhaps he meant something like electroshock treatment). Nonetheless, Ike was at first incensed and made Patton apologize to the soldier. Patton came from a well-to-do military family and from childhood he meant to be an officer. He did not go to school until twelve because his parents were teaching him the classics at home. Thus when he finally went to high school, he could neither read nor write but could quote tremendous swatches of Homer and Shakespeare. His youthful acquaintance with military historians from antiquity through the Civil War gave him an almost mystical foreknowledge of terrain he'd never seen. He was a good scholar and champion athlete. He was our roughest, wiliest general in Africa, Sicily and Europe.... Best book so far in the Army Times series.", Very Good in Good dust jacket
