Circa early 1800s. 13 x 8 1/2 map on 15 1/2 x 11 paper. Multiple fold lines, small tear on right edge. Some ink transfer due to being folded. Jean Baptiste d'Anville (1697-1782) was a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. He was known for his meticulous research. This map was originally drawn for Charles Rollin's "Ancient History". It shows the route taken by Cyrus the Younger (d. 401 BC) and his 10,000 Greek mercenaries east across present-day Turkey, south through Syria to the banks of the Euphrates River, where Cyrus died in the Battle of Cunaxa. The remaining Greeks then made their way north along the banks of the Tigris, through present day Iraq, Armenia and Georgia to the Greek cities of the Black Sea. The route is based on Xenophon's "Anabasis", a first hand account of the journey. This particular map is Plate VIII from an English translation of "Ancient History".. Book.
