J.W. (?? John WHITE) : An Album of 17 Original Watercolour Drawings By This Artist

The collection of 17 typical watercolour drawings by this artist, now mounted and bound in 1/2 brown morocco by Morell, early 20th Century. The cokllection contains many of the well-known Malay and African ethnic subjects associated with this artist. Who J. W. was remains an enigma. In 1851 the London firm of W. Robert & Lowes Dickinson published ‘The Caffre Tribes: Sketches of some of the various classes and tribes inhabiting the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope and the Interior of Southern Africa, with a brief account Descriptive of the Manners and Customs of Each’. The 41 plates were by ‘J. W.’, Dickinson states that ‘J. W.’, the artist, was a talented gentleman many years resident at the Cape. Research by A Gordon-Brown suggests that the identity of ‘J. W.’ was J. White - see Africana Notes and News - Vol 20 P17-19. ‘J. W.’ and also A. Gordon-Brown - Pictorial Africana, 1975 ‘J.W.’ in any event was a Cape Civil servant who made these sketches/watercolours and sold them to visitors to the Cape in the 1840’s. His watercolours, unacknowledged, were used in several publications in the mid 1800’s.
