Collection of five original documents from the City of Stockton, California. Some documents are entirely handwritten in ink while others have a combination of printed text and handwriting. All documents are on beige paper. 1891-1908. Documents range between about 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" and 8" x 13." Each document is one page. All documents are clean and intact overall except for age toning, some wrinkling, and the occasional mark (some ink stains on 1907 document). The 1903 document has been extensively repaired; it has wrinkling affecting some of text on left edge and has been glued on a leaf of paper following a complete tear through the upper-right corner. The 1903 document is Good. Each of the remaining documents and the entire collection are Very Good. This is a collection of documents that certify the grading of streets in Stockton to meet city code. The following are summaries of each document by date. (1) October 7, 1891: printed in purple ink; signed by Henery and Atherton; inscription by the Deputy; Superintendent of Streets Samuel Henery and City Surveyor G. A. Atherton both certify the completion of "the grading, macadamizing and curbing of Washington Street ... from El Dorado to Center Streets." (2) March 5, 1903: entirely handwritten and signed by City Surveyor G. A. Atherton; Atherton reports on the completed grading of the north half of Main Street in the vicinity of Lincoln Street; stamp of Superintendent James Gianelli and signature of Deputy Pool at the bottom. (3) February 5, 1907: printed in purple ink; signed by Wright and Tumelty; Superintendent of Streets Oscar E. Wright and City Engineer R. C. Tumelty certify that affected property holders "have graded, macadamized, curbed and guttered Poplar Street between the east line of Baker Street and the east line of Stockton Street to [Wright and Tumelty's] entire satisfaction." (4) July 7, 1908: signed by Tumelty, Superintendent Oscar E. Wright, and Deputy Pool; City Engineer R. C. Tumelty certifies that property owner Thomas J. Stephens in West Stockton has graded Stockton Street in front of his lots to the "center line" of said property. (5) November 24, 1908: signed by Tumelty; City Engineer R. C. Tumelty certifies that property owner J. J. Nunan in West Stockton has graded Stockton Street from their property to the center line of Stockton Street and "the southwest quarter of the intersection of said Stockton Street with Oak Street.".
