A speech that was originally delivered before the United States House of Representatives on January 25, 1848 by Henry Bedinger III (1812-1858), an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He served as a U.S. Representative from Virginia from 1845-1849 and U.S. Minister to Denmark from 1853-1857. He was a Democrat. Much of Bedinger's speech is a collection of his counterarguments against past statements made by critics of President James K. Polk. Most, if not all, of the critics Bedinger opposes in this speech are Whig Congressmen. Bedinger is supportive of the Mexican-American War and Polk's administration. He addresses a number of points including Polk's general handling of the war, his correspondence with John Slidell, and the return of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to Mexico. Bedinger seeks to vindicate Polk from claims that Polk's decision to allow Santa Anna back into Mexico led to Jose Joaquin de Herrera's deposition. Bedinger argues that Polk did not allow Santa Anna to return until after Herrera surrendered his leadership to Paredes.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
