UK,thick 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/VG+.No owner inscrptn but presence of a seasonal (Christmas,1913) JOHN BULL 'Bullets Competition' compliment's slip/label, tipped-in to front free endpaper.Colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj with gilt embossed title+author letters to front panel,slightly grubbed and age-soiled white background spine/backstrip with blue ink lettering and plain white,undecorated rear panel similarly age grubbed.Some shelf-wear to edges,some creasing,rubbing and chipping,a few closed tears to top+ lower edges and small losses to head of spine - affecting letters SIN in RISING missing; a small detached piece of dw/dj included but not repaired,minimal chipping and loss to foot of same,small piece missing at top,rear corner,miniscule loss to other corners - but approx 97% present. Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original dark red cloth boards /covers with a single-line white ink blind-tooled border edge to front board/ cover with bright,crisp,stamped gilt lettered title+author to rectangular panel at the top of the board,below and with the other upright rectangular panel a small (5cm high by 4cm wide) gilt-bordered colour portrait illustrated onlay.Spine/backstrip slightly darkened to almost maroon - despite presence of dw/dj, and a small circular sunned/faded spot concomitant with aforementioned missing letters on dw/dj at it's head of spine - with bright,crisp,stamped gilt lettering, rear board plain without decoration,and plain white endpapers,hinges solid and sound with no cracking.Verso of front and recto of rear free endpapers,each with off-set shadows.Negligible shelf-wear, bumping,creasing and no fraying to any edges,corners or spine/backstrip - no nicks,tears or splits present.Top edges very lightly dust-soiled - much less than normally encountered or would expect for a book of its age - but still fairly bright, fore-edges with some minimal,sporadic foxing/spotting,bottom edges deckled (untrimmed); contents bright,tight,text body exceptionally and remarkably clean, solid and sound - near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,could appear unread - apart from my own collation.UK,thick 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,v-viiixpp+2-312pp [paginated] includes XXVII (27) chapters and an epilogue, author's note,plus [unpaginated] half- title,title page with dedication to Joan Begbie - one of his four daughters,who had several books published including 'Sergeant the Dog' and 'Freelance the Pony.' and contents list/table. A children's 14thC chivalric adventure novel.A really bright crisp and exceptional example for the book's age and it's period,particularly with the presence of the dw/dj.
