BELL, John Zephaniah (1794-1883) : A Fine 3pp Autograph Letter to R. S. Rintoul, Signed and Dated 12 Nov 1846

4pp. Bell addresses Rintoul "The very handsome way in which you have spoken of my doings in the Manchester School of Design, and the interest you appear to take in the advancement of Art encourage me to address you without introduction...", and sending an advertisement he wishes to place in The Spectator. He flatteringly requests that this be in the form of a "Puff" and indicates he would be happy to pay for this. He makes arranegements to call at the paper's offices. John Zephaniah Bell 1794–1883 was a Scottish historical and genre painter. Robert Stephen Rintoul (1787 - 22 April 1858), British journalist, was born at Tibbermore, Perthshire, in 1787, and educated at the Aberdalgie parish school. After serving his apprenticeship to the printing trade he became the printer and subsequently the editor of the Dundee Advertiser. In 1826 he went to London where he was editor of The Atlas before, in July 1828 with the assistance of friends, founding The Spectator.] In this publication Rintoul strongly supported the Reform Bill, and to him was due the catchphrase "The bill, the whole bill, and nothing but the bill". After publishing and managing the affairs of the The Spectator for more than thirty years, he sold it shortly before his death.
